Everybody loves a good comeback, but a setback? Not so much. The truth is, you can’t have the latter without the former. A setback is, by definition, a setup for a comeback. Setbacks are going to happen; it’s a part of life. But what do you do when life deals you a losing hand?
The key to long-term success is not in your ability to succeed, but the way you view and handle adversity. There are always a couple of critical choices you must make when it happens. The first choice is your perspective: how you see the setback. The second is how you respond to the setback. How we curve setbacks defines our path in the world and our long-term results. Regardless of what your story is, you can rewrite it at any time. That’s the beauty of life; you can decide to start over at any time. So, how can we continue to Be more, even when hardship happens?
1. Refocus Your Energy
Experiencing a setback should not be the end of your efforts toward a particular goal. it can actually be the right opportunity to redirect yourself to the path that better serves us. Ever try to complete one of those paper maze games as a kid? How often did you make it through with a single, unbroken line? The answer is probably never. You hit a dead end, circled back and looked for a new path. Apply that same sense of perseverance to your other challenges by never letting your circumstances define you. If you need to take a step back in order to refocus and gain perspective, then do it. Attitude is a choice. Develop a positive attitude so you can think and act in a positive way.
2. Set Clear Intentions for a Comeback
We all go through periods in our lives where we feel stuck between where we want to be and where we are currently. During times like these, nothing seems to be working or changing. Embrace this time, because it is a time of preparation. When life deals you a losing hand, you can either waste time worrying over it, or decide to look at the opportunities that it has offered you, and the experiences that you want to come out of it. You will fail several times before you get things right. Choose to Be more and use that motivation to persevere.
3. Develop a Daily Action Plan
This is your daily plan of action.

Your desire to accomplish your dreams has to be bigger than your excuses. Break down your goals into smaller, more workable actions so you can work towards them every day, seeing real progress along the way. Knowing that you actually are getting closer is the best possible motivator. Also, work on getting the knowledge and coaching to developing the right skills to keep moving forward. Remember: You may not be responsible for getting knocked down, but you are solely responsible for getting back up. Only those who act achieve their goals. Apply commitment, focus, and course corrections as required, and the comeback isn’t an eventuality. It becomes your new reality.
Don’t beat yourself up; pick yourself up, dust yourself off and go get it done! Make your setback a part of your story and be proud of it. Temporary setbacks and letdowns are learning experiences, however tough they may seem at first. Regardless, there is no reason for a temporary situation to turn into a permanent disaster.
